Two fishermen in a small rowboat

General regulations & public access

Various regulations apply in Sweden to protect fish stocks and the environment in fishing areas. Some of these are imposed locally while others apply on a regional basis.

It is generally forbidden to fish without a permit or some other form of authorisation. Poaching is punished severely. Fishing permits are relatively inexpensive and are often valid for several waters in so-called fish conservation areas. Angling is free on the largest lakes, along the coast and out at sea.

You should always check on the rules that apply in the area where you will be fishing. It is important to be aware of minimum size limits and conservation areas where it is not permitted to use certain fishing methods in the whole or part of the waters. Information on local restrictions will be available from the place where you buy your fishing permit.

Fishing in the sea for sea trout is permitted from 1 March to 15 September, and the minimum size limit is 40 cm. The minimum size for salmon is 50 cm, both in the sea and in rivers. Fish below these limits must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing in rivers and streams for salmon and sea trout is usually permitted between 1 March and 30 September. No permit is needed for fishing in the two largest lakes, Vänern and Vättern. For trolling in Vänern and Vättern a maximum limit of 10 lures per boat applies, and the minimum size for salmon and trout is 60 cm. A minimum size limit of 40 cm for char is imposed on Vättern

The Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten)

The Right of Public Access involves both rights and responsibilities.

§ You can take a boat on to someone else’s waters. You can swim, moor your boat for a couple of days or so and go ashore, provided you do not go too close to private property or go ashore in a prohibited area. However, in some areas there are local regulations which limit access.

§ You can light a fire but not on rocks, and never in areas where there is a general ban on fires. Always take great care when lighting a fire in the countryside.

§ It is forbidden to stay on or pass over someone else’s property, and you should never go less than about 75 metres from houses.

§ You can camp for a night in a tent on land which is not being used for agriculture and which is not close to houses. Camping near someone’s home is allowed only with the landowner’s permission.

§ You are not permitted to drive a car, motor-cycle, moped or any other motor vehicles in terrain and on private roads which are closed to motor vehicles.

§ Please do not leave litter in the countryside. All litter must be taken away or put in dustbins. Fishing lines, hooks, plastic containers, bottle caps, cans and glass can all seriously harm wild animals.

§ Naturally, you must not cut down trees or bushes, nor are you allowed to break branches or strip the bark or resin off growing trees. It is also forbidden to take birds’ eggs or to disturb nests and young animals. Picking mushrooms, wild berries and non-protected flowers is permitted.
