With plentiful sunshine, long evenings and short nights on their way, the Swedes have plenty to celebrate on Midsummer’s Eve. All across the country, locals dance together around Midsummer Poles dressed with fresh leaves and flowers, sing songs and consume copious amounts of schnapps. Visitors are welcomed to join the festivities and there is nowhere better than Läckö Castle by Lake Vänern where the dancing begins at 2pm on 20th June and continues into the early hours. There is also a three day medieval market (www.lackoslott.se) so tourists can take home a piece of Sweden. Stay at Alberts Hotel in Trollhättan, overlooking the locks with special summer rates from 995 SEK (approx £86) per night for a double room including breakfast. Go to www.goteborgplus.com to book.
